This song appeared (as a different recording) on the Hooked On Phonics' "Hooked on Bible Stories" album back in 2006.
They tasked us with writing six songs, one of which was about the birth of Jesus. Val was raised Jewish, and Brendan's an atheist, so without a lot of experience with either the New Testament or Christianity, our way into the story was through the universal experience of having a kid, which we had done just a few months before with the birth of our own son, Mose. (He makes a cameo appearance in the video at the end.)
This version is our remake--the version that made it to the album never quite met our expectations for it, so we recorded a cover of our own song and we present it to you here.
Long journey
so weary
hard road for both of them
feet heavy
eyes bleary
long way to Bethlehem
she's never been so tired
he's never been so worried
the baby's coming any time
no kindness
no cradle
there's no room at the inn
in a manger
in a stable
this new life will begin
her eyes are filled with wonder
his eyes with tears of gladness
their baby boy is born tonight and they say
welcome, welcome, welcome to the world
welcome, welcome, welcome to the world
so quiet
so peaceful
she rocks her son to sleep
come angels
come people
come shepherds with your sheep
come see our little savior
come tiptoe very softly
come gather round our darling boy and tell him
Welcome (sh- don't wake the baby)
Welcome (sh- don't wake the baby)
Welcome to the world
Welcome (sh- don't wake the baby)
Welcome (sh- don't wake the baby)
Welcome to the world (wwwaaaaaahhhh)
Welcome (let me hold the baby)
Welcome (let me hold the baby)
Welcome to the world
Welcome (let me hold the baby)
Welcome (let me hold the baby)
Welcome to the world
